Madelyne father was a fisherman and from a very young age she used to go out to sea with him every morning. With every day that passed, she got more and more attached to the sea. she became her father’s helper and learnt how to run the boat on her own. This is how she learnt to become a fisher woman. At thirteen, Madelyne life changed and her love for the sea was transformed from a hobby and a passion to a career full of responsibility. Her father got sick and was not able to fish anymore. The sea was the only source of their livelihood. She really struggled in the beginning as it was a huge responsibility to be totally in charge of the boat, but they needed money badly to survive and she had to endanger her life so that they could live! Madelyne journey as a fisher woman continues to this day, Fish is scarce near the shore and 6 nautical miles where fishing is allowed is not enough for all Gaza fishermen to get enough fish for their families. Like them she couldn’t fulfil my family’s needs too on many days. In 2013, She took out a loan from the Bank for £15,000 and bought a tourist boat to supplement the family income and to take people out on pleasure cruises. Madelyne is married to the fisherman Khader, Khader, and now they have two beautiful daughters. Also, Madelyne is set up workshops for women who want to learn how to fish and how to make fishing nets. I have also set up a Women’s Fishing Club for those who work at sea and for the wives of the fishermen too. This is going to be the first Club of its kind for ladies at sea.
